US from a long time has been looking out for a technique to slash their dependence on OPEC and now it looks probable that in the near future the Alberta Tar Sands may turn out to be the relief they have been looking for.

Alberta Oil Sands and its extraction
Although the Alberta Oil Sands have been titled with the tag of the “dirtiest oil of the world ", they contain an approx of 97 percent of the crude oil supply of Canada. Prior to the collapse of the oil prices and the late economic crisis the oil sands production was that of 3/4 of million barrels of crude oil and that too on a daily basis.

Extracting this Oil Petroleum Products is a tedious process and huge sums were required to be invested and the prices until recently did not permit for these type of expensive projects.

For every single barrel of oil which is pulled via the sands the jungle above needs to be cut down after which an approx of 2 tons of the peat moss is essential to be removed and lastly 2 more tons of the sand needs to be removed. From this sand the Oil sands Production is done which is indeed a task which consumes much time.

The greater part of the oil, however contained in the Alberta tar Sands was till date irretrievable. It was way below the surface and was so frozen that the Oil extraction techniques proved to be ineffective and the tasks seemed next to impossible.

However with the advancement in technology and the initials taken by the leading California Oil Company and due to the extraction methods such as Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage well known as (SAGD) it is now possible to get hold of the oil and that too in a cost effective manner.

US from a long time has been looking out for a technique to slash their dependence on OPEC and now it looks probable that in the near future the Alberta Tar Sands may turn out to be the relief they have been looking for.

Once the demand for the oil ascends the sands will be the best possible alternative and competitor to OPEC.  However there are some issues concerning the environment which are at present associated with Alberta Sands but with the novel SAGD technique the extraction will be much affordable and environment friendly too. For the coming future the oil sands are the best alternative especially when the major reserves in the world are depleting.
