A Rich History
Nags
Head is so much more than just a day at the beach. It is an area of
North Carolina that is rich in significance and history. Even the name
itself holds some historical intrigue, and there is some debate over its
origin. Some people believe the name Nag’s Head comes from a town in
England, while others prefer to believe that pirates once roamed the
beaches at night and attempted to lure ships to sure by using a lantern
tied to the neck of an old nag.
Though no one knows for sure how
the name came about, Nags Head was officially established during the
1830s as the first tourist colony, and it wasn’t long before the area
became a wildly popular family summer retreat, and over the years, its
beauty and charm has kept visitors coming.
Nag’s Head is just a
few miles away from several beautiful historic lighthouses, and is in
close proximity to other historical sites, such as Kitty Hawk. A quick,
15 minute drive will take you right to the spot where the Wright
Brothers flew the very first airplane. And military history buffs in the
family will be interested to know that there are several boats from the
Civil War and both world wars sunken just a few miles off shore. A trip
over to the Outer Banks History Center will give you some time to look
through original documents and pictures from the area from over the
centuries.
Of course, as times have changed, so has Nag’s Head,
but visitors always enjoy a visit to the original homes along the
breakers known as Cottage Village, which have kept their original
structures – and charm – for over 75 years.

a day enjoying sand, surf and history, you and your family will want to

artifacts and memorabilia.
